ITEM OF THE WEEK

This week's item is the debut release from brand new Chicago band Golden Birthday.

Golden Birthday
overlays old, half-broken drum machines and effect-ey keyboards with satisfying, simple guitar hooks to create warm pop music on their debut record "Infinite Leagues".

Infinite Leagues is earnest pop music stripped down to it's bare elements, lots of love songs and lots of songs about the loss of love. A very satisfying/romantic listen; put this record on while making dinner for your significant other as the leaves are falling outside and watch the sparks fly. Perfect fall album.

Available on LP and CD, LP's pressed on clear vinyl and limited to 500 copies.

Both availabe now @ Golden Age.

On November 1, The pre-eminent American biennial, Prospect 1 will open in New Orleans; it looks to be huge. Listed as taking up 100,000 square feet, it will have many satellite venues and involve some really rad contemporary artists (Mark Bradford, Clare E. Rojas, Trenton Doyle Hancock et al.). Sounds like a very positive thing for an important American city torn apart by Hurricane Katrina. Prospect 1 runs for 11 weeks and I've included an interview with the biennial's curator, the talkative Dan Cameron, below.

I've noticed an increased activity in Chicago right now with publications; the 2nd issue of the super attractive Proximity Magazine was just released and I've just caught wind of Prompt, another locally created publication with writing that extends so far beyond our Chicago socio-sphere.

In particular I picked up a Prompt to read the DIY, WHY? essay and was pleased. Conrad Bakker presents a well composed, analytical survey of DIY from 1940 to the present, breaking down many of the different manifestations of DIY from Punk Rock to Martha Stewart. Of personal note was the connection between DIY and entrepreneurship, which is relevant to everyone who's in a creative capacity and/or on a hustle.

Both Prompt and Proximity available at Golden Age.

I don't know why but this website makes me feel pretty optimistic about life in general.  Jamie Livingston took a polaroid everyday for 18 years ending up with over 6,000 photos.  It ended with his death in 1997.

There's a show tonight called 'Winner Circle' at Scott Projects that I think you should all attend. It's new work from Golden Age endorsed artist Michael Hunter. Hunter will be showing a variety of abstract sculpture and from my speculation, it looks to be post-minimal, volumetrically pleasing assemblages of a humorous/playful nature.

The opening is Friday, Oct 10, 6 - 11pm. The show runs through Oct 31.

Scott Projects is located at

1542 N Milwaukee Ave (between Damen Ave and Honore St)
Bucktown/Wicker Park, Chicago
El: Blue or Pink Line to Damen. Bus: 50, 56, 72.
